The russian journal published an article on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Ilham Khayyam oglu Alakbarov, corresponding member of ANAS, head of the Protozoology laboratory of the Institute of Zoology

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the prominent protozoologist Ilham Khayyam oghlu Alakbarov, a corresponding member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, head of the Protozoology laboratory of the Institute of Zoology, an article dedicated to him was published in the Russian "Marine Biological Journal". Ilham Khayyam oghlu Alakbarov was born in Baku in a family of biologists. His father, Khayam Mukhtar oglu Alakbarov, candidate of sciences, was a famous mammologist, the author of many scientific articles and monographs. He worked at the Institute of Zoology of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences (hereafter AAS). His mother, Khalida Huseyn gizi Guliyeva, Ph.D., worked at the Institute of Botany of ANAS for many years. Ilham Alakbarov's choice was determined by the specialty of his parents, and after graduating from high school, he entered the Biology faculty of Azerbaijan State University (he graduated in 1971). In 1974, he graduated from the post-graduate studies of the AS Institute of Zoology of the Azerbaijan SSR. In 1977, he defended his candidacy and doctoral dissertations in 1987 at St. Petersburg State University. In 2007, he was elected a corresponding member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, and in 2009, he received the scientific title of professor.

In 1972-1981, Ilham Alakbarov was the chief laboratory assistant, junior researcher, senior researcher at the Institute of Physiology of the Azerbaijan SSR AS, in 1988-1989 he was a senior researcher at the Institute of Zoology of the Azerbaijan SSR, laboratory director in 1989-2007, director of the institute in 2007-2011, as the deputy director of the institute for scientific affairs in 2011-2016, and as a representative of ANAS in the biomonitoring and scientific research group of "BP Azerbaijan" in 2011-2016 for 7 years. Since 2016, he has been the head of the Protozoology laboratory at the Institute of Zoology of the Ministry of Science and Education.

In 1977, I.Kh. Alakbarov successfully defended his candidate thesis on "Planktonic infusors of Mingachevir, Varvara and Jeyranbatan reservoirs". In the plankton of these three reservoirs, he found 120 infuser taxa, inter alia 1 new genus and 20 new species. In 2008, he participated in the research project of free-living infusers of Lake Baikal together with his Russian and German colleagues, and in 2005-2009 he conducted joint research with scientists from the University of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caspian Sea. The scientist has taxonomically described 4 chapters, 17 genera and more than 100 species of infuser and bowl-shaped amoeba found in sea, freshwater basins and soils of Azerbaijan, Russia, Ukraine and Central Asian countries.

 The scientist is the author of about 200 scientific works, including 4 monographs and 1 authorship certificate. Under his scientific guidance and consultancy, 7 Ph.Ds. and a doctor of sciences were prepared.
