Glaucoma causing disability is widely spread among the population

 

Sumgayit city and Goychay region are at the top for the spread of visual acuity among adults over the 10-year period in Azerbaijan. Glaucoma, cataracts, blindness, and weakness are widely spread in the country along among adults and in children under the age of thirteen with miopia.

Director of the National Center for Ophthalmology named after academician Zarifa Aliyeva, correspondent member of ANAS Elmar Gasimov expressed during the speech at the joint scientific session on "Human health is the basis of the development of Azerbaijani society".

Glaucoma causing disability is widespread among the population. The spread of this disease in the republic is 14.5-18.7 percent. At present, there are 22,256 patients with glaucoma in our country. The number of registered in the center is 15 thousand 265 people. In the regions this figure is 914. It is impossible for them to engage in any business activity. The state allocates them to retirement, the speaker lined out.

According to the correspondent member of the Academy, 33 thousand 639 people applied to the center last year. Of them 13 thousand were first and 21 thousand were secondary patients.

Touching on the activities of mobile clinics, the director of the Center said that 36,645 patients were examined in such clinics and nearly 6,000 surgeries were performed.

Elmar Gasimov pointed out that on April 28 a great conference dedicated to the 95th anniversary of academician Zarifa Aliyeva will be organized and several foreign delegates are expected to attend the event.
