The employee of the Institute of Zoology was on a expedition

On 18.07-29.07.2023, Acting Head of the "Hydrobiology" Laboratory of MSERA Institute of Zoology, PhD in Biological sciences, Assoc. Prof. Suleyman Suleymanov, joint with the employees of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, participated in a complex ecological monitoring expedition in order to determine the impact of pollution on the Caspian Sea and the environment in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea with the scientific research vessel "Alif Hajiyev", to study the condition of sturgeon and other species of fish and the water environment, as well as to asses the state-of-the art condition of ecological situation.
During the expedition, ichthyological materials were collected from 45 stations consisting of 9 sections. As a result of the research, in recent years, due to the lowering of the level of the Caspian Sea, temperature exceeding the norm, increasing pollution, and extremely poor monitoring of fishing, a strong rejuvenation of the population structure of Caspian kutum and Pseudophoxinus fishes living in the Caspian Sea was observed.
Note that, unlike previous years, in the Middle and South Caspian, the number and size of the Mnemiopsis leidyi comb has decreased. During the monitoring work in 2022, the number and size of Beroe ovata comb, which was found for the first time in the Kyzylagac water area, was observed to increase in 2023.
