Institute of Zoology held an commemorative event dedicated to the 33rd anniversary of the January 20 tragedy

On January 18, 2023, a commemorative event was held in the institute's library on the 33rd anniversary of the January 20 tragedy. The participants of the event commemorated the martyrs with a minute of silence. The event was opened by Aladdin Eyvazov, Ph.D. in Agrarian sciences, Acting Director of the Institute of Zoology. In his speech, he spoke about the role of the January 20 tragedy in the development of the national cognition of the Azerbaijani people regarding freedom and independence, and said that in order to suppress the people's struggle for democracy and national freedom, the Soviet leadership sent troops to Baku, and as a result, 146 people were killed, 744 people were injured, and 841 people were illegally arrested. He added that national leader Heydar Aliyev expressed the first political attitude to the bloody incident on January 21, 1990 at the meeting held at the permanent representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow. A. Eyvazov noted that even after 33 years have passed, traces of that bloody history are still in the memories like the first day. Later in the event, Doctor of Biological Sciences Gara Fataliyev, PhD in Biology Hafiz Mukhtarov, Adil Aliyev,  a senior laboratory assistant of the Zoological Museum Khatira Kahramanli shared their bitter memories of this bloody history.
At the end of the event, a video depicting the events of bloody January was displaying.
