"Water resources, hydro-technical facilities and environment" international scientific-practical conference kicked off

The first Baku International Water Week under slogan “Water is not only the source of life, and even life itself” has kicked off in Baku.

On March 15, concerning 100th anniversary of Shollar-Baku Water Facilities Complex, “Azersu” OJSC and Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences co-organized international scientific-practical conference on "Water resources, hydro-technical facilities and environment".

Before the conference, the guests looked through photo and art exhibitions dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Shollar-Baku Water Facilities Complex. In advance, the AR President's Assistant for Economic Affairs, Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ali Asadov, read out President Ilham Aliyev's appeal to the conference attendees.

At the event, chairman of “Azersu” OJSC Gorkhmaz Huseynov stated that, the first centralized water supply systems were established in Azerbaijan in the XVIII century. He noted that some water pipelines were constructed at that time in order to provide drinking water to Baku. In 1911-1917 on the project of a well-known engineer William Lindlay, the first main water pipeline from the source Shollar was constructed to Baku. With the support of the famous philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, Shollar-Baku water facilities complex, which is the unique in the world, was commissioned 100 years ago in these days.

Huseynov noted that the great work in the field of water supply, conducted under the leadership of national leader Heydar Aliyev's initiative. In the 1970s, the growing demand for potable water in the city has been solved by construction of Kura and Jeyranbatan water supply systems.

10 years ago - in March 2007 with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev was laid the foundation of the Oguz-Gabala-Baku water pipeline, the construction of 2625 km long pipeline was completed in 2010. The belt was carried out during the years of independence and became the largest domestic infrastructure project. In order to ensure the capital's population with drinkable water, Jeyranbatan Water Treatment Complex, with productivity of 6.6 cubic meters per second, or 570 thousand cubic meters per day, was built.

G. Huseynov invited everybody to sign Baku Declaration which is far from political, racial, religious, and social considerations, serving the common interests of mankind, calling for joint efforts in environment, ecology, clean water and sanitation for the sake of protecting our planet.

Conference was attended by President of ANAS, Academician Akif Alizadeh, chairman of the World Water Council Benedito Braga, rector of Baku State University, Academician Abel Maharramov, President of the International Water Resources Association Patrick Lavard, deputy director of the Institute of Water Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences Mikhail Bolgov and others.

Event was continued with sectional assemblies.
