Our International Biology Olympiad Team visits Living Systems Research Institute
From 12 to 19 July 2026, the 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2026)—one of the world's most prestigious international science competitions for secondary school students—will be held in Vilnius, Lithuania. The Olympiad will bring together talented students from across the globe to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills in biology.
Azerbaijan will be represented by four students from grades 10 and 11: Ilham Aliyev, Rasul Shahverdiyev, Oghuz Alili, and Yalchin Orujlu.
As part of their preparation for the competition, the national team visited the Living Systems Research Institute under the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan (MSE RA) on 6–7 July. The visit was organized under the guidance of Elkhan Tahirov, Chair of the National Jury and Head of the Azerbaijani IBO Team, together with Matin Muradli, Deputy Chair of the National Jury.
The students were welcomed by Irada Khalilova, Associate Professor, PhD in Biology and Acting Director of the Institute; Sara Aliyeva, Associate Professor, PhD in Biology and Scientific Secretary; and Heads of Laboratories - Gular Huseynzadeh, Associate Professor, PhD in Biology and Elyana Tahirova, Associate Professor, PhD in Biology.
During the visit, the participants gained in-depth knowledge of the diversity of animal species native to Azerbaijan and other regions of the world. They also toured the Institute's research laboratories and became acquainted with its scientific infrastructure and ongoing research activities.
The primary objective of the visit was to strengthen the students' theoretical background, enhance their practical laboratory skills, and provide additional academic support in preparation for the International Biology Olympiad.
We wish our national team to be succeed at the 37th International Biology Olympiad and be confident that they will represent Azerbaijan with distinction and return home with outstanding achievements.
