Today marks the birth anniversary of the prominent ophthalmologist-scientist, Academician Zarifa Aliyeva

April 28 is the 103rd anniversary of the birth of Honored Scientist, distinguished ophthalmologist, and Academician Zarifa Aliyeva. Academician Zarifa Aliyeva was born on April 28, 1923, in the village of Shahtakhti, Sharur district of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.  She graduated from secondary school in Baku with excellent grades in 1942 and, in 1947, completed her studies at the Azerbaijan State Medical Institute, Faculty of General Medicine, with honors. 

Beginning in 1949, she worked as a research scientist at the Azerbaijan Scientific Research Institute of Eye Diseases. In 1960, she defended her PhD dissertation entitled “Treatment of trachoma with synthomycin in combination with other therapeutic methods”, specializing in this field and earning the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences.

In 1977, she successfully defended her doctoral dissertation at the Helmholtz Moscow Research Institute of Eye Diseases on the topic “The condition of the visual organ among workers in certain chemical enterprises of Azerbaijan”, and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences.

In recognition of her exceptional contributions to medical science and her long-standing research activity, Professor Zarifa Aliyeva was elected an active  member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in 1983. She served as a scientific supervisor and advisor to numerous doctoral and PhD candidates and participated in many international congresses, conferences, and symposia.

She was one of the authors of significant scientific works such as “Therapeutic Ophthalmology” and “Fundamentals of Iridodiagnostics”, and authored 12 monographs, textbooks, and teaching manuals, nearly 150 scientific papers, one invention, and 12 rationalization proposals. 

Zarifa Aliyeva passed away on April 15, 1985, in Moscow. The memory of this outstanding scientist, physician, and remarkable individual continues to live on in the hearts of those who knew and admired her.
