March 3 – International Wildlife Day
March 3 is celebrated every year as International Wildlife Day. Since 2013, March 3 has been recognized worldwide as World Wildlife Day by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, with the aim of drawing public attention to the conservation of wild fauna and flora and raising awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife.
The primary purpose of this day is to engage society in the protection of wild animals and wild plants, encourage public care for wildlife, and educate people about these issues. Additionally, this day reminds us of the urgent need to strengthen efforts to combat crimes against wildlife.
It is evident that humans rely on wildlife and biodiversity resources to satisfy various needs, ranging from food and fuel to medicine, clothing, and other necessities. Such use often leads to the loss of species, habitats, and ecosystems, posing a significant threat to life on Earth.
Addressing these global problems requires active involvement from international organizations. Currently, in our country Azerbaijan, a number of measures are being implemented to protect wildlife. The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources cooperates with local organizations on projects aimed at restoring endangered species. In addition, Azerbaijan has established a network of protected areas to safeguard its flora and fauna, including 10 national parks, 10 state nature reserves, and 24 state nature sanctuaries. The total area of these protected territories accounts for 10.3% of the country’s land area.
