An enlightening meeting on "The negative consequences of early marriage and marriage between relatives" was held

On December 8, 2025, at the Zoology Institute, a meeting was held on the topic of “The negative consequences of early marriage and marriage between relatives” in connection with the implementation of the “Regulation on raising awareness about the negative consequences of early marriage and marriage between relatives among youth to protect and strengthen the importance of family and marriage,” approved by the Decision No. 213 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan on June 23, 2020 (clause 6.1.11).

During the meeting, the Institute’s Scientific Secretary, PhD, Associate Professor Sara Aliyeva stated that according to Azerbaijani legislation, early marriage is the forced marriage and cohabitation of boys or girls under the age of 18. She explained that under the Law “On the rights of the child” of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the 1989 “Convention on the Rights of the Child,” individuals who have no full legal capacity are considered children. In that case, the entry of children into marriage is regarded as a violation of human rights. She noted that girls who experience such cases face a number of problems — to their physical, psychological and reproductive health; to their social life; and to their ability to represent themselves as individuals within the family and society. All these issues, besides creating various obstacles to life and health, also produce risks. Such circumstances lead to divorces, the birth of children with limited health capacity, and as a result — an increase in the number of socially vulnerable groups.

In addition, the Chair of the Institute’s Trade Union Gulnara Aslanova, and the Chair of the Youth Scientists and Specialists Council Leyla Nadirli, delivered extensive reports on the causes that lead to early marriage, the negative consequences of marriages between relatives, and the steps taken to prevent these cases.
