An employee of the Institute of Zoology interviewed to report.az

An employee of the Institute of Zoology’s Hydrobiology Laboratory, Dr. (Sci.) Süleyman Süleymanov, gave an interview to "Report". He stated that in recent years the ecological conditions in the Caspian Sea and inland water bodies have changed. The regular drop in water levels is caused by climate change, pollution, and human activity.

“This affects the organisms living in the water bodies. In the Caspian Sea, in addition to marine fish, there are also migratory and semi-migratory fish. The current problem has less impact on the marine fish compared with the others. However, presently the sea water has retreated 200-400 metres from the shore. The spawning grounds of semi-migratory fish have been cut off. Migratory fish, although they live in the sea, also travel to rivers to spawn. Unfortunately, the water level in the rivers has also decreased. The Kura River in certain cases cannot reach the sea. Species of sturgeon and golden fish (salmonids) living in the Caspian Sea are on the verge of extinction,” he said.
