Institute of Zoology held the defense of the doctoral dissertation
On March 12, 2025, the next meeting of the Dissertation Council of the Institute of Zoology of MSERA was held. The defense of the doctoral dissertation of Ilhama Gudrat gizi Karimova, a leading researcher of the Laboratory of Terrestrial Invertebrates, Ph.D. in Biology, Associate Professor, on the topic “Fauna, systematics, ecology and phylogenetics of mantis (Neuroptera) insects of Azerbaijan (Mantispidae, Ascalaphidae, Myrmeleontidae, Nemopteridae)” in the specialty 2413.01 “Entomology” was held.
Opening the event, the Executive Director of the Institute of Zoology, Chairman of the Dissertation Council, Doctor of Biological Sciences Elshad Ahmadov gave the floor to the applicant to make a lecture.
Ilhama Karimova first provided detailed information about the relevance of the dissertation, the object and subject of the research, goals and objectives. He noted that the families included in the research object were studied from a faunistic, systematic, zoogeographical and phylogenetic point of view, DNA barcoding of some species was carried out using molecular-genetic methods, and nucleotide sequences were entered into GenBank. The scientist, who emphasized that 11 new species and 3 new subspecies were recorded for the Azerbaijani fauna from materials collected from all natural regions of the country during 2012-2023, said that this dissertation work played an important role in filling the gap in the field of studying the Neuroptera fauna of Azerbaijan.
It should be noted that the scientific advisor of the dissertation is Natalya Yuryevna Snegovaya, a senior researcher of the Laboratory of Terrestrial Invertebrates of the Institute of Zoology, Doctor of Biological Sciences.
At the end of the meeting, the members of the Dissertation Council highly appreciated the research work and noted that the work meets the requirements set for dissertations by the Supreme Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
