An expedition was organized to the liberated Eastern Zangazur territories of Karabakh

Associate professor Tavakkul Iskandarov, Acting head of the Laboratory of Terresterial Vertebrates of ANAS Institute of Zoology, a leading researcher Gulbeniz Gasimova and a researcher Sevinj Rajabova participated in an expedition conducting for a survey of the terrestrial vertebrate fauna of the Eastern Zangazur as well as for the research of the species recommended to the "Red Book" of Azerbaijan, on 01-07.09.2022. 
The research work was carried out with the support and participation of "ANAMA" specialists. Selection of research areas and access to that area took place with the permission of "ANAMA" specialists as well. The research was carried out by the method of visual observation from the outside and in biotopes, where safety is allowed (steppe hills, lake, river, springside grasslands, bushes, ruins of settlements).
Binoculars were used for visual observation of birds, "Garmin GPSMAP 64st" device was used for height measurement, and "Canon EOS 4000D" camera was used for photo and video recording. During the research, 1 amphibian, 3 reptiles, 12 birds and 3 mammal species were observed. 2 species of birds recommended for the III edition of the "Red Book" of Azerbaijan (Deep yellow (Buteo rufinus Cretz., 1827), White-headed grouse (Gyps fulvus Habl., 1773)) and 1 species of turtle (Mediterranean sea turtle (Testudo graeca Linn., 1758)) was recorded.
Note that, the Mediterranean tortoise (Testudo graeca Linn., 1758) is included in the IUCN Red List (VU).
