Institute of Zoology hosted for the next scientific seminar
On May 5, 2022, the researcher of the Mulberry Silkworm Selection Department of the Sheki Regional Scientific Center of ANAS Zarintaj Shukurova delivered a report on "Study of Saturnia pyri silkworm cocoons" at the Institute of Zoology of ANAS.
The speaker spoke about the possibility of indoor growing and obtaining cocoons for use in silkworm breeding of the Great Night Peacock or Pear Saturn (Saturnia pyri Denis & Schiffermuller, 1775) silkworms that butterflies were first collected from the mountain-forest massif of the north-western region of Azerbaijan, as a result of research carried out at the mentioned laboratory of the Sheki Regional Scientific Center. Shukurova added that the presence of rich forests, large green areas and favorable conditions in Azerbaijan create great opportunities for the controlled cultivation of native species of wild silkworms belonging to the Saturdayniidae family.
In conclusion, the speaker informed the seminar participants that the calculated percentage of silkworm cocoon and silk fibroin of the resulting cocoon are competitive with the silk of silkworms used for asnological purposes.
