Employees of the Institute of Zoology and Genetic Resources have conducted a monitoring of wild birds

On March 16, 2021, the employees of the Institute of Zoology and Genetic Resources of ANAS have conducted a monitoring in order to observe the behavior of birds, in the poultry farm belonging to the physical person Hasanov Logman Filman oglu located in the territory of Berk-Dere No. 10 of Absheron region (in connection with the loss of birds on 19.02.2021-10.03.2021) and in the Academy campus of ANAS.
The letter sent by the Food Safety Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Logman Hasanov on 23.02.2021 stated that according to the test protocol of the Central Veterinary Laboratory, the causative agent of ornithosis was found in the pathological materials of registered ovaries and instructed to take appropriate measures. At present, no birds are kept in the workshops of the poultry farm. Preparations for disinfection and mechanical cleaning are being carried out in the empty workshops.
It is not ruled out that wild birds in the environment can infect domestic birds with pathogens. No mass gatherings or carcasses of wild birds were found in the area during the observation. The area is located on the migration route of birds. At a distance of 300-400 m, in the area where the waste products of poultry farms are located, small flocks of wild boar, common starling, common partridge, sparrow, gray crow, wild pigeon were observed. It is possible that species belonging to the Anseriformes family, the main carriers of bird flu will temporarily rest and settle in the four small lakes nearby, that gulls will come into contact with these birds, and that they will come to landfills and spread bird flu to other birds.
The results of the monitoring suggest that, despite the veterinary and sanitary measures taken against infectious diseases of birds, because of any risk factor, the birds are infected with the infectious agent, which led to the death of many birds.
During the monitoring in the Academy campus of ANAS only the body of a wild bird (crow) was found. In order to determine the cause of the bird's death, it was recommended that the body be removed, packaged and sent to the Central Veterinary Laboratory of the Azerbaijan Food Safety Institute with an official letter of appeal.
