A meeting devoted to the life and creativity of prominent scientist, academician Seyfaddin Aliyev was held today at the Institute of Zoology of ANAS.

Opening the meeting, director of the institute Elman Yusifov spoke about the special contributions of Seyfaddin Aliyev in the training field of highly qualified personnel, who made important contributions to the development of zoological sciences in Azerbaijan.

As a result of long years of hard work S. Aliyev revealed 709 species belonging to 13 sub-families and 217 genus, 16 subspecies 84 forms in Azerbaijan. Among them, 445 species, 75 forms of Azerbaijani fowl and 67 species were new to the former USSR territory. Among the discovered species, 33 species are endemic to Azerbaijan, 32 species to the Caucasus.

S.Aliyev studied the ecological-faunistic review of the 709 and 16 subspecies, their distribution, formation, zoogeographic analysis, nutritional relations, and bioecology of harmful species. It has identified for the first time that 61 species are harmful, 16 of which have been harmed for agricultural crops, 33 species of forests, fruits and shrubs of the Greater and Lesser Caucasus, and 12 species in the mountainous areas.

S.Aliyev determined the role of 21 species of parasites regulating the number of cotton seeds in nature, 12 species of predatory birds, and the result of this research was applied in farms as a means of integration.

He has drawn up maps covering the extent of spread of cotton shrubs in cotton-growing regions, as well as complex pests of technical and melon plants based on research materials for many years.

In 2013, the Red Book of Azerbaijan published 52 species of rare and endangered butterflies, of which 21 species were scarves.

Aliyev is the author of 168 scientific works, including 4 monographs, 4 books for helping household workers, 3 scientific-mass books, and 50 articles published in 10 volumes of "Azerbaijan Encyclopedia". He is also one of the authors who translated V.A.Dogel at 55 paged textbook into Azerbaijani.

Professor Seyfaddin Aliyev also supported his work in the preparation of young cadres as well as scientific activities. Under his leadership, he has defended 3 doctors of sciences and 9 candidates of sciences. He has provided scientific advice to graduate and scientific staff from time to time, from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Novosibirsk, Estonia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Georgia, Dagestan, Iran, Turkey and France from many countries and he was opponent of their candidacy and doctoral dissertations.

  1. Aliyev is the creator of 9 textbooks, 2 manuals, 6 monographs, 4 booklets, and the fourth volume of the Explanatory Dictionary of Azerbaijani language, designed by Zoology and Entomology terms.

For his longstanding dedication in the development of Entomology science, he was awarded four times (2000, 2005, 2010, 2015) with honorary decree by the Presidium of ANAS.

S.Aliyev was a corresponding member of ANAS for his achievements and services in the field of zoology and entomology. In 2001, he was elected as a real member of ANAS.

At the end of the event, the head of the Parasitology Laboratory, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Gara Fataliyev, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Canbakhish Najafov shared their memories about the outstanding scientist.
