Cambridge University professor lectures at Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Institute

Head of Computational Structural Biology Laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at ANAS, Professor Garib Murshudov, Head of Computer Crystallography Group at Cambridge University, has started lectures on the specialty of Modern Problems of Biology and Methods of Structural Biology to masters studying the first year.

Let's note that Murshudov started his scientific activity in the laboratory of molecular-genetic bases of productivity processes headed by academician Jalal Aliyev and was sent to the Institute of Crystallography of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Having successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation, Murshudov received an invitation from the University of York, Great Britain. He won a great scientific research grant of £ 500,000 from the very prestigious Wellcome Trust Fund in 2001 and created an independent group at the University of York. In 2011, he was invited to serve as head of computing crystallography group at the molecular biology lab at the Medical Research Council in Cambridge, UK.

Our country has organized courses and seminars to teach biological crystallography and electron microscopy in more than 20 countries, including Japan, India, the United States, European countries, South America.

Murshudov is the author of more than 100 scientific papers, including articles published in "Nature", "Science" magazines. The results were presented at more than 60 scientific conferences. More than 45 percent of the data contained in the Data Bank of Proteins are analyzed by its programs.

He is a member of the UK Royal Society of Statistics since 2001 and is one of the executives of the UK-based computer program developing and distributing crystallography (CCP4).

Professor Murshudov is one of our compatriots who are trying to help develop science in Azerbaijan. In 2009 and 2011, Gurban Murshudov's citywide scientific seminars were organized and several informal workshops were held in Baku.

Scientific-research program on "Methods of purification and checking of molecular structures", under his guidance in 2017, is financed by the Presidium of ANAS and now serious studies are carried out in this direction.

G.Murshudov pays special attention to the preparation of young researchers in Azerbaijan.
