Outstanding scientist and scientific organizer, active member of ANAS, Sc.D. in Biology, professor, chief of the department of Entomology of the Institute of Zoology (ANAS) Seyfaddin Vali Aliyev’s 85th anniversary of birth date and 60th anniversary of scientific-organizational activity has been celebrated at the Institute of Zoology on May 29 2015. The event was opened by the director of the Institute of Zoology, corresponding member of ANAS Ilham Alakbarov. He congratulated Ilham Alakbarov on behalf of the staff, wished him health, new successes in his work.
The outstanding scientist Seyfaddin Vali Aliyev was born in the village of Alishar in Sharur region on 30.05.1930. He was educated at secondary school (seven years) of the village of Alishar, then he was entered to Nakhchivan Medical College. After graduating from the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University, S.Aliyev started his scientific activity as a junior researcher in 1952. He defended his Candidate’s Dissertation in 1961 and Doctoral Dissertation in 1977.
Academician S.V.Aliyev is the one of well-known scientists for his special services in the field of Zoology in the Republic and abroad. His scientific activity is extensive, comprehensive and colorful. He has found 716 species of butterflies (noctuid) in Azerbaijan. 390 species, 145 species and 67 species of them have accordingly been new to the republic, Transcaucasia, former USSR territory.
The scientist has studied ecological review of these species in Azerbaijan, their spreading on vertical zones, ecological groups, researched bioecological characteristics of the harmful species, developed scientific foundations of the fight against them, defined damaging of 61 species of noctuids to agricultural crops. He is the author of 168 scientific works, 3 monographs, 4 books, 3 scientific popular books, “Zoology” textbook for secondary school students. 3 doctors of sciences and 8 candidates of sciences have defended their dissertation works under his supervision.
Academician S.V.Aliyev has decently represented our republic in different congresses, conferences, international congresses. He was awarded Honorary Decree of the Presidium (ANAS) for his long-term selfless labor in development of Entomology at 3 times and the Appreciation of agricultural institutions and international scientific organizations. In 1986, he was awarded the medal of “Labor veteran” and the diploma, grant of the International George Soros in 1993. Twenty articles on his research works were published. He has performed on the radio in the section of the “Nature of Azerbaijan” on various issues. S.Aliyev was elected a corresponding member of ANAS on specialty of Zoology for his special services in development of Zoology and Entomology in 2001, then an active member of ANAS on the same specialty in 2007.
