Heavy bereavement for scientific community of Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani science suffered a heavy loss. May 6, 2017 on the 85th year of life the famous scientist-chemist of the republic, an active member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Doctor of chemical sciences, Professor, Honored Scientist Rafiga Alirza gizi Aliyeva died.

Rafiga Aliyeva was born on September 20, 1932 in the city of Nakhchivan. After graduating from high school in 1951-1956 she got an education at the chemical faculty of the Azerbaijan State University.

Starting her career in Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute in 1956, Rafiga Aliyeva worked at the Azerbaijan State University in 1957, and in 1958-1960 she worked as a junior researcher at the Institute of Chemical Problems of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. After graduating from the chemical faculty of the Azerbaijan State University in 1960-1963, Rafiga Aliyeva worked at the Department of Analytical Chemistry of the University from 1964 until the end of her life, holding the positions of assistant, senior lecturer, associate professor, professor. Since 2001, she was in charge of the research laboratory "Environmental Chemistry and Environmental Protection".

In 1970, Rafiga Aliyeva defended her Ph.D., and in 1999 - her doctoral thesis, in the same year she was awarded the title of professor. In 2007, she was elected a corresponding member, and in 2014 – an active member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

Devoted life to chemical science, Rafiga Aliyeva gave all knowledge and skills to the training of highly qualified personnel in this field. The research of a scientist, more than half a century engaged in pedagogical activity, was devoted to establishing the relationship between the parameters characterizing analytical reactions and the structure of complex compounds. A number of Rafiga Aliyeva’s studies directly related to environmental protection were simultaneously aimed at developing a methodology for the determination of metals using organic reagents and their isolation. Her work, related to the current environmental problems, contributed to the sustainable development of our country.

Author of more than 450 scientific works, 25 textbooks and teaching aids, 20 patents, Rafiga Aliyeva was a member of a number of scientific councils and scientific societies. Under the guidance of the scientist, more than 20 PhDs and doctors of science have been trained.

The fruitful scientific and pedagogical activity of the famous scientist-chemist Rafiga Aliyeva was highly appreciated. For her services in the development of science and education in Azerbaijan, she was awarded the highest award of the independent Azerbaijan Republic - the Order "Shohrat".

The memory of Rafig Aliyev, a well-known teacher and scientist, will always remain in the memory of everyone who knew her.
