ANAS Institute of Physiology is 50
Today is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ANAS Institute of Physiology. The Institute was established on March 1, 1968 by the decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan on the basis of the physiology sector. This research institution, named after academician Abdulla Garaev, made a great contribution to the development of physiology and medical and biological sciences in the republic.
Since the day of activity, in addition to the fundamental research aimed at solving urgent medical and biological problems, works of the applied nature, meeting the requirements for the development of the national economy in the republic, were carried out, based on local resources. Studies on the study of physiological and clinical aspects of the impact on the human body of naphthalan oil and a number of medicinal waters gave impetus to the use and development of resort and balneological resources of Azerbaijan on a scientific basis.
In a scientific institution in the Laboratory of Occupational Pathology of the Vision Organs, under the direction of Academician Zarifa Aliyeva, new methods of treating eye diseases were discovered.
Scientists and specialists of the Institute of Physiology have studied the ecological and physiological state of fish in various water basins and coastal zones of the Caspian Sea of Azerbaijan and important results have been achieved.
Since 2015, the Institute has developed a comprehensive program of medical and biological research on the physiological and molecular genetic mechanisms of aging. At present, this multidisciplinary program is carried out within the framework of mutual cooperation between the Institute of Gerontology and Bioregulation of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, the Institute of Gerontology of the UAEEN and the Medical Center under the Administration of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan with the participation of the Azerbaijan Medical University, Baku State University and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Today in such departments of the Institute as the Biology of Aging, Environmental Physiology and Neurobiology, research is being carried out on the following issues: "Molecular-genetic and physiological bases of aging", "The influence of environmental factors on the body: physiological mechanisms and ways of correction" and "Neurobiological foundations of plastic features of nervous processes: the participation of monoaminergic mechanisms in the regulation of adaptive processes".
