Leech reproduction technology is firstly being developed in the Institute of Zoology

The technology of leech reproduction is being prepared in laboratory conditions at the Laboratory of Applied Zoology Center of the Institute of Zoology of ANAS for the first time in the country.

Research works are being carried out in 2016 on artificial reproduction of leeches in the laboratory.

The leeches kept In the laboratory conditions at positive 18-220C in the winter, at 24-270C in the summer with special care are able to generate a generation at different times of the year. They can give cocoon once in six to eight months. The leeches give 3 to 8, often 4-5cocoon every time. In every stroke, there are 15-20 (8-15 in most cases) embryos.

In our country, there are favorable conditions for the development of leeches in natural conditions. Thus, the weaknesses include water levels of Azerbaijan, including the Devechi port, the Gulf of Small Gyzylagaj, the Lankaran natural reservoirs, the Kuratrafi lakes, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the Ganja-Gazakh zone.

Let us note that the Hirudinea constitutes a separate class of annular worms (Annelida). Most of them are ectoparasites, with the predatory representatives of the zalds found. All the representatives of the vertebrate animals (fish, reptiles, mammals, birds and mammals) are fed with blood.
